Why every girl should own a little black dress

As I have reached my ‘freedom years,’ I have come to believe that fashion and friendships are very similar things. Aristotle believed that there are three types of friendship; Friendships of utility (people who are useful to each other), Friendships of pleasure ( the ones who bring short lived pleasure and enjoyment) and Friendships of virtue (the ones that last until you are old and grey) and yes, fashion follows these same lines.

The denim jacket is the friendship of utility – a bit boring but suitable, even essential - Tassled glittery leggings are the friendship of pleasure – fun, exciting, but oh such a no no by next season, but the LBD (Little Black Dress), ah the LBD is the true friendship of virtue.

Once described as the ‘Ford’ of the fashion industry by American Vogue, the Little Black Dress, transformed into the epitome of chic by Chanel, is still very much a staple for the wardrobe of every 21st century girl.

From dinner dates to dancing and daytime wear, there’s a style for all shapes and sizes just as Chanel intended, to tirelessly exude elegance and sophistication whatever the weather, whatever the occasion. Think Audrey Hepburn tucking into a croissant in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or Liz Hurley’s safety pinned number at the Three Weddings and A Funeral premiere (although you do need to be a shade braver to claim this as your little black dress of choice.)

Colour will come and go, bottle green or midnight blue will proclaim to be the ‘new black,’ but hand on the heart of every fashionista, we all know that black will never fade from the forefront of women’s clothing.

The LBD chosen correctly will reign undefeated, ready to hand when all else fails, when there’s nothing else to rely on, when fat days rule, or when diets are doing their job and all you want to do is shimmy about town and show off your amazing new figure.

Indeed, you can even take on the LBD diet – what other garment in your wardrobe can boast its own fitness regime!

And so this, my fashionistas, is why every woman should own a Little Black Dress. No matter what else hangs in your wardrobe, this garment is essential.

“Give me one friend, just one, who meets the needs of all my varying moods.”(Esther M. Clark American Poet)
